    In the event of Internet link failure, the Barracuda Link Balancer automatically sends traffic to an available Internet connections without administrator intervention. During a link failure, Barracuda Link Balancer regularly checks the health of a given connection, assuring fast reconnection when Internet service is restored. By automatically detecting link health and failure, the Barracuda Link Balancer assists administrators by providing a worry-free redundant connectivity to the Internet.

    Bandwidth Management and Quality of Service (QoS)

    The Barracuda Link Balancer provides administrators with tools to automatically prioritize critical Internet applications. For example, Web browsing and email can be guaranteed bandwidth while peer-to-peer applications and media streaming can be assigned a lower priority. The flexibility to manage priority of Internet usage ensures low-priority bandwidth-intensive applications never interfere with business-critical operations.

    Barracuda Link Balancer Architecture

    Traditional Firewall

    Installed at the network perimeter, administrators can deploy the Barracuda Link Balancer as a network firewall to consolidate the management of network security. The Barracuda Link Balancer incorporates firewall functionality, including:

    • Network address translation (NAT). NAT allows the Barracuda Link Balancer to isolate internal network traffic from the Internet.
    • 1:1 network address translation (NAT). The 1:1 NAT differs by allowing administrators to directly assign external addresses to internal clients. Ideal for hosting internal applications or services requiring regular outbound requests, such as SMTP, 1:1 NAT provides a secure method to facilitate approved traffic.
    • Port forwarding. Port forwarding allows the same external addresses used for Internet and WAN bandwidth aggregation to be used for network access. This is designed for administrators to gain access to management interfaces, VPN gateways and terminal servers.
    • IP access lists. The use of IP access lists enable administrators to allow or deny access, either inbound or outbound, to remote networks, clients, applications, services and ports.

    Local Network Services

    Addressing common network needs for the mid-market organization, the Barracuda Link Balancer includes traditional network services.

    • DHCP server. The Barracuda Link Balancer automatically assigns client IP addresses using the DHCP protocol. Along with defining traditional DHCP options, administrators view active leases in real time.
    • DNS caching server. The Barracuda Link Balancer is configured to query the domain name server systems or proxy DNS requests to your ISP's DNS servers. With DNS caching enabled, frequent DNS requests are served quickly and locally from the Barracuda Link Balancer's internal DNS processes.

    Can my VPN traffic be handled by the Link Balancer?

    Yes. The Link Balancer is able to pass VPN traffic using 1:1 NAT or port forwarding.

    Can I use the Barracuda Link Balancer at the perimeter as a firewall?

    Yes. As it's an appliance that is designed for the network perimeter, the Link Balancer offers firewall functions to help maximize the number of active Internet connections. By offering traditional firewall features such as network address translation (NAT), 1:1 NAT, and port forwarding, as well as DCHP and DNS caching services, the Barracuda Link Balancer is able to increase the availability of Internet links to the network - all without consuming more bandwidth.

    How does the Barracuda Link Balancer decide which link should handle client requests?

    The Barracuda Link Balancer evaluates connections automatically using latency, performance and availability and saturation. Through taking all these conditions into account, the Barracuda Link Balancer is able to dynamically select the best link to handle Internet traffic.

    Can the Barracuda Link Balancer provide failover and link balancing of inbound traffic?

    Yes. The Barracuda Link Balancer provides inbound failover and link balancing through authoritative DNS services. Inbound traffic to host machines is able to be balanced across several links, all without using additional ISP support, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) or special routers. The configuration is as simple as assigning each host a different Internet IP address for each Internet link used to reach it. Then, the Link Balancer is able to distribute inbound traffic across several Internet links to the host by returning the IP address of the most appropriate Internet link when responding to DNS queries.

    Does the Barracuda Link Balancer support H/A (high availability) configuration?

    Yes. For high availability deployment, a pair of Barracuda Link Balancers can be setup as an active-passive cluster. A virtual IP with automatice failback and failover is shared by the two devices. Clustering synchronizes configuration settings between the devices. H/A deployment is possible when the Barracuda Link Balancer is used as a firewall or a transparent device in front of a firewall.

    Would my file download speed increase by implementing the Barracuda Link Balancer?

    That will depend on the situation. On occasions then there are several transfers of data taking place between various sets of hosts, the Link Balancer balances respective connections across available links which prevents saturation and congestion - to provide the quickest possible download.

    However, if there is no congestion or link saturation, then the short answer is no.

    How can I determine the right model for my IPsec VPN needs?

    You can find the maximum remote IPsec peers for the models in the datasheet. This example assumes a single local subnet to remote subnet transport over a given tunnel, referred to as a phase 2 entry. Multiple transports would reduce the capacity.

    For example, the Link Balancer 330 supports a maximum of 20 VPN peers. If each tunnel to the peers has two phase 2 entries, then the effective number of maximum VPN peers would be 20/2 = 10. The maximum number of phase 2 entries supported per tunnel is three.

    What applications can the Barracuda Link Balancer apply Quality of Service (QoS) rules to?

    Admins are able to pick from dozens of predefined applications or apply QoS rules to selected custom port ranges.

    Can the Barracuda Link Balancer manage DNS and DHCP requests?

    Yes. The Barracuda Link Balancer simplifies management of IP networks by integrating both DHCP and DNS caching servers.
